The heat is on, and we’re not talking about the weather (at all – it’s pretty chilly out there). No, we’re talking about Colorado’s high-visibility DUI enforcement campaign, The Heat Is On. The program combines periods of increased DUI enforcement, typically around holidays, and a strong campaign for public awareness for the problem of DUI. For the program’s duration, Colorado police increase patrols and create additional DUI checkpoints to ensure public safety. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) allows for these increased periods of enforcement via grants to law enforcement agencies. The program runs 12 times a year and most recently covered Super Bowl weekend. Between 6 p.m. Jan. 30 and 3 a.m. February 2, 234 DUI arrests were made. Of those, over a quarter happened on Super Bowl Sunday. These 234 arrests show a drastic decrease from last year’s Super Bowl, when 327 arrests were made. So far, it appears that the program is doing its job. According to CDOT, Coloradans can expect an equally vigorous enforcement effort during the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day weekend, running from March 13 to March 18. If you plan on celebrating Irish heritage with friends and family that weekend, be sure to drink responsibly. The Heat Is On: Super Bowl Weekend DUI Results

Colorado’s streets may be chilly, but they’re heating up with the implementation of the state’s high-visibility DUI enforcement campaign, aptly named “The Heat Is On.” Unlike the erratic weather patterns, this program follows a consistent schedule, combining periods of intensified DUI enforcement, typically centered around holidays, with a robust public awareness campaign addressing the critical issue of DUI. Throughout the program, law enforcement agencies ramp up patrols and establish additional DUI checkpoints to enhance public safety. These efforts are made possible through grants from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) to support law enforcement agencies.

“The Heat Is On” runs twelve times a year, strategically timed to coincide with holidays and events when alcohol consumption tends to rise. Recently, it encompassed the Super Bowl weekend. From 6 p.m. on January 30th to 3 a.m. on February 2nd, a total of 234 DUI arrests were made. Remarkably, over a quarter of these arrests occurred on Super Bowl Sunday alone.

These statistics represent a significant drop from the previous year’s Super Bowl weekend, during which 327 DUI arrests were recorded. It appears that “The Heat Is On” campaign is effectively fulfilling its mission of deterring drunk driving incidents.

According to CDOT, Colorado residents can anticipate an equally robust enforcement effort during the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day weekend, scheduled to run from March 13th to March 18th. Suppose you plan on celebrating Irish heritage with friends and family during this period. In that case, it is imperative to do so responsibly. To ensure a safe celebration, you can refer to last week’s Digital Guide to Getting Home Safe, which provides valuable tips and resources for responsible drinking and finding safe transportation options.

This proactive campaign serves as a vital reminder of the importance of preventing impaired driving and its potential consequences. Colorado is taking significant strides toward creating safer roadways and ensuring the well-being of its residents and visitors by providing law enforcement agencies with the necessary resources and raising public awareness.
